ETS1 belongs to a family of transcription factors that regulates expression of several genes participating in extracellular matrix remodeling. Members of the ETS family regulate a variety of genes involved in stem cell development, cell senescence, and tumorigenesis. ETS1 is typically absent in healthy gastric epithelium, but expressed in many gastric carcinomas and oral squamus cell carcinomas. This family of transcription factors contains 2 main domains; a transactivation domain (TA), and a winged helix-turn-helix DNA-binding domain that recognizes the core consensus DNA sequence GGAA/T of target genes. This DNA-Binding-Domain is highly conserved among ETS family members.
